Emergenza Sorrisi: Over 4,500 Free Surgeries for Children in the Middle East and Africa

At the headquarters of the Italian Parliament in Rome, Emergenza Sorrisi (Doctors for Smiling Children) organized an international conference titled “Ten Years of Humanitarian Cooperation”, with the participation of prominent official, medical, and media figures, and with the support of governmental institutions and international organizations.

The conference was held under the patronage of the Italian Parliament, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Ministry of Health, in collaboration with several partner organizations, including the Association of Foreign Doctors in Italy (AMSI) and the Euro-Mediterranean Medical Union, alongside various civil society organizations active in humanitarian and healthcare work.

The event highlighted the association’s ten-year journey (2007–2017), during which it has dedicated its efforts to providing specialized medical care for children in the most vulnerable regions, particularly in the Middle East and Africa.

The conference was opened by Dr. Fabio Massimo Abenavoli, President of the association, who emphasized that the organization’s mission is to restore both smiles and dignity to children who lack access to proper medical care. He stressed that the association’s humanitarian work is driven by values of solidarity and compassion, supported by a wide network of volunteers and partners.

For his part, Professor Fouad Aouda, orthopedic consultant and founder of several international medical organizations, underscored the importance of the association’s role as an executive arm in international healthcare cooperation. He noted that joint medical efforts contribute to strengthening stability and addressing social and psychological challenges in affected communities.

Professor Aouda pointed out that the association has carried out numerous medical missions across several countries, including Palestine, Iraq, Tunisia, Senegal, Afghanistan, and Burkina Faso, in cooperation with international doctors and volunteers. These missions have provided specialized surgical procedures for children suffering from congenital deformities, burn injuries, and war-related trauma.

He revealed that over ten years, the organization has conducted more than 72 medical missions, performing over 4,500 free surgical operations for children, at an average rate exceeding one surgery per day—an achievement that reflects the dedication and commitment of its teams.

He also highlighted additional initiatives launched by the association, including environmental awareness projects and the development of digital medical platforms to provide health consultations, as well as training programs aimed at strengthening local medical capacities in beneficiary countries.

In the same context, Italian MP Ileana Argentin expressed her full support for the association’s activities, praising the significant humanitarian impact it has on the lives of children and their families.

Several ambassadors and international officials also commended the association’s efforts, stressing the importance of expanding its work to reach more countries, given the growing need for such humanitarian medical interventions.

The conference concluded with a reaffirmation of Emergenza Sorrisi’s ongoing commitment to its humanitarian mission and its determination to expand its medical and training programs, ensuring that specialized healthcare reaches the most vulnerable children around the world.

جمعية أطباء من أجل أطفال مبتسمين: أكثر من 4500 عملية جراحية مجانية للأطفال في الشرق الأوسط وأفريقيا

في مقر مجلس النواب الإيطالي في العاصمة روما، نظّمت جمعية أطباء من أجل أطفال مبتسمين (Emergenza Sorrisi) مؤتمرًا دوليًا بعنوان: "عشر سنوات من التعاون الإنساني"، بحضور شخصيات رسمية وطبية وإعلامية بارزة، وبدعم من مؤسسات حكومية ومنظمات دولية.

وجاء تنظيم المؤتمر برعاية مجلس النواب الإيطالي ووزارتي الخارجية والصحة، وبمشاركة عدد من الجهات الشريكة، من بينها جمعية الأطباء من أصل أجنبي في إيطاليا (AMSI)، والاتحاد الطبي الأوروبي المتوسطي، إلى جانب منظمات مجتمع مدني فاعلة في مجال العمل الإنساني والصحي.

واستعرض المؤتمر مسيرة الجمعية خلال عشر سنوات من العمل الإنساني (2007–2017)، والتي كرّست جهودها لتقديم الرعاية الطبية المتخصصة للأطفال في المناطق الأكثر احتياجًا، خاصة في الشرق الأوسط وأفريقيا.

وافتتح أعمال المؤتمر الدكتور فابيو ماسيمو أبينافولي، رئيس الجمعية، مؤكدًا أن رسالة الجمعية تقوم على إعادة الابتسامة والكرامة للأطفال الذين يفتقرون إلى العلاج، مشيرًا إلى أن العمل الإنساني الذي تقوده الجمعية يستند إلى قيم التضامن والمحبة، بدعم من شبكة واسعة من المتطوعين والشركاء.

من جانبه، أكد البروفيسور فؤاد عودة، استشاري جراحة العظام ومؤسس عدد من الهيئات الطبية الدولية، على أهمية الدور الذي تقوم به الجمعية باعتبارها الذراع التنفيذي في مجال التعاون الصحي الدولي، مشددًا على أن العمل الطبي المشترك يسهم في تعزيز الاستقرار ومواجهة التحديات الاجتماعية والنفسية في المجتمعات المتضررة.

وأشار عودة إلى أن الجمعية نفذت عشرات البعثات الطبية في دول عدة، من بينها فلسطين، العراق، تونس، السنغال، أفغانستان، وبوركينا فاسو، بالتعاون مع أطباء ومتطوعين دوليين، حيث تم تقديم عمليات جراحية متخصصة للأطفال الذين يعانون من تشوهات خلقية، أو إصابات ناتجة عن الحروق والحروب.

وكشف أن حصيلة العمل خلال عشر سنوات شملت تنفيذ أكثر من 72 بعثة طبية، تم خلالها إجراء أكثر من 4500 عملية جراحية مجانية للأطفال، بمعدل يتجاوز عملية يوميًا، في إنجاز إنساني يعكس حجم الالتزام والتفاني لدى فرق العمل.

كما أشار إلى مبادرات أخرى أطلقتها الجمعية، من بينها مشاريع التوعية البيئية، وتطوير منصات طبية رقمية لتقديم الاستشارات الصحية للمحتاجين، إلى جانب برامج تدريبية تستهدف الكوادر الطبية المحلية في الدول المستفيدة.

وفي السياق ذاته، عبّرت النائبة الإيطالية إليانا أرجنتين عن دعمها الكامل لأنشطة الجمعية، مشيدةً بالأثر الإنساني الكبير الذي تحققه في حياة الأطفال وعائلاتهم.

كما أثنى عدد من السفراء والمسؤولين الدوليين على جهود الجمعية، مؤكدين أهمية توسيع نطاق عملها ليشمل مزيدًا من الدول، نظرًا للحاجة المتزايدة إلى هذا النوع من التدخلات الطبية الإنسانية.

واختُتم المؤتمر بالتأكيد على استمرار جمعية أطباء من أجل أطفال مبتسمين (Emergenza Sorrisi) في رسالتها الإنسانية، والعمل على توسيع برامجها العلاجية والتدريبية، بما يضمن وصول الرعاية الصحية المتخصصة إلى الأطفال الأكثر احتياجًا حول العالم.
